The gratifying incident took place at the Texas Roadhouse in Tennessee. The boy, Octavius Mitchell Jr, was taken to the diner to celebrate his fourth birthday by his mother and uncle.
The diner, however, sits their customers with birthdays on a saddle, but this was a special moment and Octavius couldn’t have experienced the best than this.
Kathryn Marasco, one of the waitresses working that day said that she was watching from a distance as the mother sang to the little boy who had his hearing aids on.
Kathryn then asked her friend and colleague Brandie White if she knows how to sing ‘happy birthday’ in sign language.
Brandie is a student from Middle Tennessee State University who was enrolled in a speech-language pathology and audiology.
They found a YouTube video of how to sing happy birthday in sign language. It took them mere seconds to learn it. When they signed a happy birthday to the young boy, his mother was overwhelmed with emotions.
Shatika Dixon, the mother, said that people think they are crazy singing or talking out loud and this kind gesture from the two girls made his birthday even more special.
She said that this was the first time Octavius communicated in sign language other than herself and his teacher.
