An urgent warning has been issued by authorities after convincing scam emails told workers they were eligible for money back.
From a fake myGov address, the circulating email directs workers to fill out an application for a tax refund.
The ATO warns people not to click anywhere in the email as it has a malicious link that redirects to a fake form to obtain personal information.
One of the scam emails tells the worker they have $80.93 to claim. The email reads: “After the last annual calculation, we noticed that you are eligible to receive $80.93 AUD.
“To submit the application electronically, please fill out the form. Once the form is completed, you will be asked to confirm that the information in the document is correct.
“Please click on the link below to submit and eForm for refund.”
The Australian Tax Office said the email was misleading as it included the myGov logo. But the link that appears to be the myGov website doesn’t take the user to a my.gob.au address when hovered over.
The scam also contains poor spelling and grammar and fails to include a name.
In addition, there is no ATO online ‘tax refund’ form and all online management of tax affairs is only carried out through real myGov accounts.
The ATO also warns to exercise caution when opening an attachment or clicking links in emails.
One internet user said: “Always check the email address who is sending the email. Government emails will always end in .gov.au….not .com That is the first sign. They will also only send an email to advise you to log on to your account, never give you a link to do it!”
Another commented: “I just got that email 12 mins ago.. lol”
A third said: “mate of mine got one last year and he replied. funny thing was he gets paid cash and never declared… codgy dunt.”
