On Thursday, Twitter’s officials came out with a new rule.
This new rule applies to candidates for public office with more than 1,00,000 followers and government officials with verified accounts.
It may also be used on rare occasions. Under this rule, any tweet that will be found offensive by their algorithms would be flagged, preventing the tweet from spreading.
This new rule has been implemented after the backlash that Twitter had to face due to the American president Donald Trump’s repetitive harmful and threatening tweets.
Though the officials refuse to put the finger on the name of the person who has led to this rule, people are quite confirmed of the reason.
Twitter officials have said that questionable tweets will run through internal task forces of the company, which will include employees from public policy, legal, safety, and some regional teams.
This procedure will determine whether a post is in ‘public interest’ or not.
The company has also pointed towards the change where ‘calls to commit violence against an individual or direct threats of violence’ from world leaders would be removed.
The decision was taken as the officials believe that such tweets can under no circumstances be in public interest.
Though a Twitter spokesperson has claimed that such an action was not due to any one world leader’s tweet, it wouldn’t be surprising if it were.
Donald Trump has used his Twitter account to share a video depicting violence against a media organization. He has also used it to retweet misinformation directed towards Muslims and threatened North Korea with nuclear war.
With this action, Twitter has banned bullying, threats, the glorification of war, and targeted harassment.
Twitter is also against tweets of threats or harassment based on color, caste, gender, nationality, religion, or any other factor. Inspired by this, some other media companies are also targeting some changes.
