Washington Redskins football team has officially dropped their traditional name and replaced it with a less controversial alternative that NFL fans have dubbed boring and bland.
Despite the name ‘Washington Redskins, Est. 1932’ taking over the stadiums for nearly ninety years, the officials have decided to come up with a new name for the football team shortly after ditching the ‘inappropriate’ name and logo depicting a Native American chief.
“We’re retiring our old name – and building a new kind of team. For the upcoming season, we’re calling ourselves The Washington Football Team,” the team announced.
Calls for the team name to be changed were initiated by activists and sponsors, who threatened to pull funding, as Black Lives Matter movement began taking over the nation.
According to critics, the word ‘Redskins’ is no longer acceptable in the year 2020 due to racist implications towards Native Americans.
While the officials insisted ‘The Washington Football Team’ name was temporary while they consider a better alternative, NFL fans and sports celebrities couldn’t help but lash out at the ‘boring’ new name.
“Who you play for? The Washington football team.
.
naw that ain’t it,” Dez Bryant, who played for Oklahoma State, tweeted. “For some reason that alone makes me feel it won’t be a football season. . I’m sad seriously. No disrespect to Washington football team but that’s a soul crusher not to have a football name.”
“Florida State Football Team. Cleveland Football Team. Chicago Hockey Team… where does it end!” one person wrote.
Another one suggested: “How generic, boring, and bland is that? We already know it’s a football team. Now give it an actual name!”
Joining the debate was also basketball legend LeBron James who wrote: “Just waking back up from my pregame nap to see about The Washington Football team??? Is that real?? No way! Oh man they had a thorough intense long board meeting about that one huh.”
Replaced!
