One of the most talked about and controversial films released last year was the film adaptation of “Cats”.
Although the saying goes that there is no bad press, the movie was talked about for the exact wrong reasons from its terrible CGI to incomprehensible plot.
In a recent press interview, composer for the source musical Andrew Lloyd Webber shared his opinions on what is widely considered one of the worst movies in a long time. The composer agreed with most of the critics in saying that the film had numerous problems.
In an interview with The Sunday Times, Webber placed the blame of Tom Hooper, the director for the film. Webber argued that the original sin of the movie was Hooper’s inexplicable announcement that anyone who participated in the original Broadway hit was to be excluded.
He summarized his overall impression of the movie as “ridiculous”. Although he did not specifically talk about what he thought about the musical aspect of the film, it seems highly likely that he was not satisfied with what the crew did with his music.
Since the release of the trailer, “Cats” instantly became the butt of many jokes online. Not only did the critics and crowd members express the utmost confusion for the weird CGI and realistic image, but even the actors also seemed lost when asked to promote the movie.
For instance, James Corden jokingly told an interviewer that he hasn’t watched the movie but has heard terrible things about it. Corden had a major role in the film.
The movie did not lack in star power – from Idris Elba and Dame Judi Dench to pop superstar Taylor Swift, the movie did not lack in the number of stars that were involved with the project.
The movie was panned by critics and fans alike. Nearly all critics gave it a negative review, saying that the whole project somehow seemed absolutely meandering and painfully boring at the same time.
Fans also turned away from the film, costing Universal an estimated $113 million. The only awards that it received were in the Razzies, where it earned 6 Razzie across the categories.
