If you own a Windows smartphone, you won’t be able to use WhatsApp on the phone in about six months time.

A WhatsApp spokesperson announced in a blog post that the messaging app will stop working on all Windows-powered smartphones by December 2019.

Furthermore, some WhatsApp feature may even stop working at “any time” before the announced deadline.

The statement went: “You’ll no longer be able to use all Windows Phone operating systems after December 31, 2019.

“Because we no longer actively develop for these operating systems, some features might stop functioning at any time.”

The WhatsApp statement comes at the heels of Microsoft’s own announcement that it will end support for its smartphone software also on December 2019. The company even advised people to buy iOS or Android devices as replacements.

WhatsApp also plans to stop supporting Android versions 2.3.7 and older, as well as iOS7 and older, by 2020.

October 2010 saw the launch of the Windows Phone operating system with its successor Windows 10 mobile following in 2015.

But due to the lack of market penetration and little interest from app developers, Microsoft decided to stop work on Windows 10 Mobile in 2017.

All official support for Windows 10 Mobile (previously known as Windows Phone) will stop by December 10, 2019.

After that date, users will no longer get “new security updates, non-security hotfixes, free assisted support options or online technical content updates from Microsoft for free.”

The company added: “With the Windows 10 Mobile OS end of support, we recommend that customers move to a supported Android or iOS device.

“Microsoft’s mission statement to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more compels us to support our Mobile apps on those platforms and devices.”

Microsoft hasn’t completely given up on the mobile market though as it has introduced Edge (the Windows 10 PC browser) to Android and iOS.

With Edge, users will be able to share websites, photos, apps, and other information between their phones and their Windows PC.
