A wife almost died after making love with her husband because she suffered a severe allergic reaction.
According to the unique case, reported by the American Journal of Medicine, the 46-year-old wife suffered from an anaphylactic reaction to medication her husband was taking as she had contact with it through his sperm.
‘Almost Killed by Love: A Cautionary Coital Tale’ described the woman as having itchy hands and feet, diarrhea, sweating and dizziness so she decided to visit a hospital.
The wife from Baltimore, Maryland in the US was checked by medics and found to have low blood pressure. Doctors initially thought she may have sepsis.
She was then placed on an IV drip and doctors gave her antibiotics. However, further tests showed that the woman was in anaphylactic shock.
Confused doctors then found out that her husband is using nafcillin to treat a bacterial infection.
“We have reported a case of an anaphylactic reaction to nafcillin in a penicillin-allergic patient via vaginal exposure to the antibiotic contained within her partner’s semen,” the report said.
“While we were unable to obtain a specimen from the patient’s husband to confirm detectable levels of nafcillin in her partner’s semen, the patient’s clinical presentation coupled with the onset of symptoms post-coitus leads us to believe she was exposed to nafcillin concentrated in the seminal fluid.”
The wife had a history of allergies to penicillin so she had avoided using it since childhood. However, she did not expect that this could happen when she made love with her husband.
Doctors managed to treat her right away and get normalized her blood pressure before releasing her with an EpiPen.
She was also told to skip sex with her husband until at least a week after he’s done with antibiotics.
