It was the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air himself that let the entire cast of the 90s hit show gather on a momentous reunion on Snapchat.
It is Will’s series of stay-at-home oeuvre called Will at Home, and for this finale of his little social media show, they have gathered to commemorate and honor one of the main cast members who wasn’t able to join – Uncle Phil, otherwise known as James Avery. Uncle Phil was Will’s wealth and rather larger-than-life figure in the series, a very loving character who captured the hearts of all viewers during its airing. Avery passed away in 2013, and 7 years later the entire cast sat down and watched Will Smith’s video mashup that was a tribute to the late actor figure.
Fans and casts alike enjoyed the overall video, although some have teared up while others were still able to laugh now and then.
Will said: ‘That just makes me teary…James Avery, James Avery, James Avery.’ Daphne Reid, who played James’ wife in the series, otherwise known as Aunt Viv added: ‘I loved that man.’ Tatyana Ali, Alfonso RIbiero, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Karyn Parsons and Joseph Marcell were all able to chip in their loving memories about the actor while managing to cry a well-shod tear from their eyes.
Smith later posted an Instagram post saying: ‘Our show wouldn’t have been HALF what it was without the talent and light that was James Avery. We all love and miss you, James.’
Avery died of complications from open-heart surgery.
Here is Will Smith’s tribute to his companion throughout his breakthrough years: ‘Some of my greatest lessons in Acting, Living and being a respectable human being came through James Avery. Every young man needs an Uncle Phil.
Rest in Peace’ Later in the Will at Home finale previously included a backtracking of the actor’s career, as he gathered with cast-mates and discussed what it was like back then to make those series, the musicality of it all and the behind stories that they shared all those years ago.
In part of those reminiscences, the memory of James Avery is always very hard to miss out, hence the reason why the final show did end the way that it did.
