Kate Middleton and Prince William first met when they were studying at St.
Andrews University in Scotland. The royal couple dated privately for years and their relationship made headlines when they were photographed on a ski trip in 2004.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge announced their engagement in November 2010 after William proposed to Kate with his late mother Princess Diana’s 18-carat sapphire and diamond engagement ring on a safari trip to Kenya same year in October.
Prince Charles quipped: “They have been practicing long enough,” when the couple made their relationship public. The Royal family was convinced that Kate would be a perfect addition to their house.
But there is a reason behind Prince William’s decision to wait for years to marry Kate even after he wanted to. The two were great friends as they studied in the same university and started dating each other but William didn’t want to make any decision in a hurry as he was seriously affected by the bad relationship of his parents Prince Charles and Princess Diana.
A Royal Romance, royal expert Katie Nicholl claims in her book that The Duke didn’t want to repeat the same mistake as his parents hence he waited to tie the knot. She wrote: “He was aware his father had been pressured into marrying Diana because she was deemed the suitable bride.”
“He was reluctant to bow to similar pressure and vowed not to be hurried at the altar. He made his feelings clear, telling a journalist in an off-guard moment that he had no plans of getting married any time soon.”
According to the International Business Times, William said: “Look, I’m only 22 for God’s sake. I’m too young to marry at my age. I don’t want to get married until I am at least 28 or maybe 30.”
During their visit to Kenya, William and Kate traveled around the country and later they headed to Lake Rutundu. The couple spent their time in fishing for rainbow trout but didn’t succeed. Before checking out from the hotel, The Duke and Duchess wrote sweet notes to each other in the lodge’s guestbook.
Kate wrote: “Thank you for such a wonderful 24 hours! Sadly no fish to be found but we had fun trying. I love the warm fires and candle lights—so romantic. Hope to be back soon.”
William wrote: “20th-21st October 2010. Such fun to be back! Brought more clothes this time! Looked after so well. Thank you, guys! Look forward to next time, soon I hope.”
The royal couple waited for a month to announce their engagement and Clarence House made a statement on November 16 stating, “His Royal Highness Prince William of Wales and Miss Catherine Middleton are engaged to be married.”
In April 2011, the couple officially tied the knot on 29 April 2011 at Westminster Abbey in London, United Kingdom.
