Many would probably call outdoor movies a bit dated especially since you could easily binge-watch Netflix from the comfort of your home or sit in La-Z Boy comfort at your nearest movie theater. Not to mention which, you don’t have to contend with the capriciousness of Mother Nature because you’re safely ensconced inside a house or building.

Still, there’s a certain old-school and romantic charm about outdoor movie night. Enough people remember the times when outdoor drive-in movies were the “in” thing when dating someone. And watching a movie together without having to stumble over stretched legs or bang knees into seats can be refreshing, especially since you’ll be watching with people you know and will have the chance to interact before (or even during) the showing of the movie.

The reasons stated above probably played a huge role in the decision for residents of Stapleton, Colorado, to host an outdoor movie night except. It was a great idea and a lot of planning went into it except for the part where Mother Nature was supposed to play along.

The Denver Channel reported that up 150 air mattresses were prepared for the event in the park. But before anyone had a chance to relax in them and watch the movie, a sudden storm crashed the party. With nothing to hold them down, the mattresses were “gone with the wind” in a hilarious jumble of flying mattresses that witnesses took to calling “The Great Mattress Migration of 2019.”

Per the Denver Post, local Robb Manes found himself in the path of that intrepid flock of wayward mattresses that flew across the city’s Runway 35 Park. Manes was relaxing by a swimming pool when a sudden gust of wind saw an air mattress dropping out of the sky. Funnily enough, it landed in the pool beside Manes, as if inviting him to try out the new floatie.

But after a few more air mattresses started dropping on him, Manes decided to get up and find out just what was going on. He was greeted by the sight of mattresses swirling in the wind and headed straight for him. But instead of running to the nearest cover, Manes decided to get his camera and film the sight.

Channeling his inner storm chaser, Manes stood his ground and captured the footage that’s even better than any film that may have been planned for that outdoor movie night at the park.

While the residents didn’t get to enjoy movie night, at least no one was hurt and they were treated to the sight of something hilarious.
