A 24-year-old doctor bit off the tongue of a rapist when he attacked her while she was resting in the staff quarters.
She bravely fought back when the attacker, who managed to enter the South African hospital by pretending to be a patient, forced his tongue into her mouth.
Her bite was so hard that it cut off part of the man’s tongue, according to police. He then ran away from the scene leaving drops of blood on the floor.
Police officers immediately put out an alert to other hospitals to look out for the man who would need urgent treatment for a tongue wound.
Doctors at a nearby hospital reported that a 32-year-old man had entered with wounds to his tongue. He was arrested and taken to the hospital where the incident occurred so the victim could identify him.
The attacker was then brought to another hospital for a surgery and will appear before magistrates once he is good enough to go out of the hospital.
“During the scuffle the doctor managed to bite off the tongue of the alleged perpetrator who ran off,” said a spokesperson for the Free State provincial health department.
“He was later arrested and then taken for plastic surgery and was operated on under police guard and he we will be handed over to be taken before a court in due course.
“It is by the grace of God that the doctor had the strength to fight back and bite the suspects tongue off. She is currently undergoing medical tests and counselling.”
