A young woman has reportedly been bleeding from her eyes during her period.
The bizarre case takes place in India where doctors were left baffled after 25-year-old married woman was rushed to a hospital after she started bleeding from her eyes during period.
As the patient explained, crying tears of blood didn’t result in any discomfort or pain. However, she complained about the condition saying it already occurred one month prior to her visit to the hospital.
After the doctors began investigating the matter, various tests came back negative and the medics couldn’t find any issues in the patient’s personal or family history that could contribute to the unusual bleeding.
Eventually, the doctors realized that the bleeding only occurred when the patient was menstruating, prompting them to diagnose the woman with ocular vicarious menstruation.
Vicarious menstruation refers to a rare condition that results in bleeding from other organs than the uterus during menstruation.
According to the MEDizzy Journal, people with vicarious menstruation typically bleed from the nose during menstruation. Some, however, can also bleed from lips, stomach, lungs, or – as seen in this case – eyes.
Following the rare case, the woman’s condition has been presented in a British Medical Journal case report in which the authors revealed that the patient was eventually treated with oral contraceptive pills.
As the patient reportedly confirmed following three months after the treatment kicked off, she is no longer bleeding from her eyes.
While people may in some cases bleed from eyes due to hemoclaria, a condition that is often a symptom of underlying diseases such as tumors or melanoma, the patient in this case bled from her eyes due to ocular vicarious menstruation.
