A 38-year-old single mother is forced to use a food bank because of a supermarket glitch that left her broke.
Shantell Jones, from Gipsyville, Yorkshire, said she paid for £474.90 worth of shopping from the Asda branch in west Hull. Despite the money coming out of her account, her card was declined and now, she is left with no money.
The mother showed the store’s manager her bank statement online but she had to leave the supermarket without groceries and money.
Now, she is forced to use a food bank as she is totally broke.
She said: “I got Christmas presents and food and things like selections boxes. I was four hours getting everything. I put my card in and paid and the lady asked me to take my card out and wipe it and enter it again.”
The card was declined and she wasn’t allowed to take her shopping with her. She said: “I got up my phone and showed them my bank statement that said it had taken the money and it was pending to leave my account. I was full of panic. I didn’t have enough money in my account to take it out twice.”
“I have nothing. I’m going to have to go to social services to get a food parcel”, she added.
Ms. Jones was unable to resolve the matter even after visiting the city center branch of her bank who confirmed the money came out of her account.
Ms. Jones said the cashier said to the manager that her statement showed that the money did go out but they were having none of it.
The woman is now forced to use a food bank for Christmas as she couldn’t get the groceries she purchased at the supermarket despite the money left her account.
An Asda spokesperson said after the incident: “We want all of our customers to have a positive shopping experience with Asda and are sorry that unfortunately on this occasion an error occurred which meant there was an issue with this individual card transaction.”
“We would encourage Ms. Jones to get back in touch with us through customer services so we can resolve this matter as quickly as possible.”
