A super enthusiastic woman from Texas was so delighted after finishing her radiation treatment for breast cancer that she accidentally broke the cancer-free bell.
Darla Jaye, a cancer patient at Harris Health Systems in Houston, Texas recalled the moment when she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
According to KTBC, Jaye said: “When you hear the words, ‘You have cancer,’ the first thing you think of is, ‘Am I going to die?’ The second thing you think of is, ‘What am I going to go through?’’
“I remember going to my first radiation treatment and I was so scared that I was laying on the table before I had the first radiation, and tears were rolling down my face and I thought, ‘How am I ever going to get through this?’’
But Jaye succeeded in her journey to fight with cancer and she credits Harris Health System for saving her life. She got the chance to ring the brass bell attached to a hospital wall, signifying the end of her radiation treatment.
“I looked forward to this day,” Jaye said.
She rang the bell with so much excitement and force that the clapper right out of the bell was ripped.
“I was like, ‘Oh my God, I broke the bell!’ I thought you know, I didn’t think I had any strength left in me, but obviously, I do!” said Darla Jaye, who had been diagnosed with breast cancer and began radiation.
Jaye took to Twitter to thank the staff at Harris Health System for saving her life and wished that every cancer patient gets the chance to celebrate in the same manner.
She wrote: ‘’Thank you so much for showing and sharing my joy at finally being #CancerFree My hope is that every cancer patient gets the chance to #BreakTheBell @@harrishealth.’’
She told CNN: “I couldn’t even fathom being done, I was so overwhelmed yesterday,” “Guess I didn’t know how strong I was!”
“I never imagined that I would make it through those 30 treatments and be able to ring that bell, so yesterday, when I rang that bell, I was celebrating that I was alive and that I was essentially done for now.”
