The oldest lady in Harrogate celebrated her 108th birthday and received over 650 birthday cards after a care home’s plea on Facebook went viral.
Dorothy Flowers, who turned 108 on October 22, puts her long life down to champagne and chocolate. She received a total of 654 cards from strangers in New York, Spain, Australia, Las Vegas, Bangkok, and other countries!
Aside from cars, Dorothy also received a range of gifts, including flowers, chocolates, champagne, and gin, to help her celebrate her special day.
“I’m lucky to have made many happy memories during my life and – even at 108 – I’m still making more,” Dorothy expressed.
“Thank you to all the people who organised this and send me cards.”
Sharing her secrets for long and happy life, she puts it down to chocolate and champagne.
Dorothy lived independently until she turned 104. It was in 2015 when she moved into a home where she had a great relationship with nurses.
To celebrate her 108th birthday, the team at the care home posted on Facebook and asked others to celebrate with Dorothy by sending birthday cards.
The resident experience manager for Bupa Southlands, Helene Ballinger, said: “It’s sad to think but, as people get older, they typically have fewer friends to celebrate with, which is why we always try and make a big effort for residents’ birthdays.
“We thought we were being optimistic by hoping for 108 cards – one for each of her years – so we’ve been blown away by the response.
“Dorothy’s something of a local celebrity now, our letterbox has been overflowing for weeks!
“We’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who sent cards, especially those from abroad. Dorothy used to travel a lot when she was younger, so they’re bringing back some lovely memories.”
