A 90-year-old woman wants to climb her stairs 282 times (equivalent of a 2,398ft mountain) to help raise money for the NHS in the fight against COVID-19.
Margaret Payne, who has raised almost £200,000, took inspiration from Captain Tom Moore after he raised millions for the NHS with his 100 laps.
Payne is hoping to reach the summit of the Scottish mountain Suilven in her own home by climbing her stairs a total of 282 times.
“I first climbed Suilven in 1944 aged 15 with my sister Elizabeth from Glencanisp, Lochinver, during the war,” Payne shared.
The 90-year-old has estimated that the challenge will take her more than two months to complete. It was posted to a fundraising page where she set a £10,000 for the NHS.
“At 90 I am planning to climb the equivalent of Suilven … 2,398 feet … in stairs at Ardvar. That’s 17 stairs, a flight being 8 1/2 feet each time. 282 times total is my challenge. I think it is going to take me about two months!” Payne wrote on her JustGiving page.
She then hit her target by 974percent when she managed to raise over £97,000.
“I wasn’t expecting anything like it – 10,000 thank yous,” she expressed. “It’s brilliant of them all and I feel the NHS really deserve it. They have been amazing. Each day they are risking their lives.”
The kindhearted woman started the challenge on Easter Sunday and climbed up three times before enjoying her lunch.
“Here we go.. starting Easter Sunday …. 3 flights before lunch today,” she shared. “Raining and windy outside but warm going up and down the stairs!”
Payne aims to give back for the ‘extraordinary support’ she has received from the NHS.
Aside from that, she also plans to donate money for the Highland Hospice.
