A 32-year-old drunk woman broke down in tears while she was being led by officers to a vehicle outside a precinct after she killed a New York City highway patrolman.
Jessica Beauvais reportedly struck and killed NYPD Highway Officer Anastasios Tsakos while he was directing traffic and assisting others on Long Island Expressway.
“I’m sorry that I hit him and that he’s dead,” she cried.
NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea said during a press conference with Mayor Bill de Blasio that Beauvais’ vehicle veered and struck officer Tsakos.
According to reports, Beauvais was driving with a suspended license and her car’s windshield was ‘completely shattered.’
Tsakos was rushed to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The 32-year-old was filmed walking out of the NYPD’s 107th Precinct in handcuffs in the same clothes she was wearing at the time of the fatal crash.
Mayor de Blasio said that the crash that Tsakos was called to also involved a motorist with a suspended license.
Tsakos and other officers were redirecting traffic from a vehicle that crashed into a utility pole when Beauvais’ car swerved and hit Tsakos.
“We see here a horrible pattern, people doing the wrong thing and other people dead because of it, and one of them a hero officer,” de Blasio said.
“(Tsakos) did everything right in his life for us and he is dead because of other people’s negligence.”
One person commented: “She’s sorry?? Her license was suspended AND she’d been drinking! She’s not sorry, she’s a criminal trying to get a reduced sentence.”
Another wrote: “Such risk taking and poor judgment on her part—the consequences of which resulted in tragedy. If only the outcome were different, but no amount of weeping will undo her actions. RIP officer.”
A third added: “God bless this officer and may his family find comfort. I pray this disgusting human rots in prison.”
