A young woman was left fighting for her life after getting pulled under the water by a giant crocodile.
28-year-old Melissa Laurie from the UK was visiting the popular Laguna de Manialtepec in Oaxaca, Mexico, together with her sister when her night out turned into a real-life horror story.
According to the reports, tourists flock to the famous travel destination where they get the chance to swim in glowing water despite warnings that the region is infested with large crocodiles.
While swimming with her twin sister Georgia, Melissa suddenly disappeared under the water and stopped responding. Minutes after kicking off a frantic search for her sister, Georgia found Melissa floating in the water unresponsive.
After attempting to get her sister out of the water, Georgia was attacked by the crocodile that presumably ravaged her sister just minutes earlier.
Fortunately, the 28-year-old managed to fight off the predator and get her sister to the shore just in time to save her life.
As the sisters’ mother revealed in an interview with MailOnline, both Georgia and Melissa sustained severe injuries and had to be rushed to the hospital. As of this writing, Melissa is still fighting for her life and remains in a coma.
“We have twin daughters who are traveling around Mexico were attacked by a crocodile last night. Melissa is alive, but we don’t know if her injuries are life-threatening or not,” mom Sue Laurie explained.
“She has water on her lungs and she has been coughing up blood. So we don’t know if she has a punctured lung or not. She has been put into a medically induced coma.”
As the girls’ father, Sean, told the publication, Melissa would be dead for sure if it wasn’t for her sister’s quick actions and bravery.
“Georgia fought off the crocodile. It was only because she is a diver and has life-saving experience that she was able to save her,” the proud dad said.
“They were swimming after dark in the bioluminescent waters when Georgia heard Melissa cry out. She called for her but she didn’t reply. She could hear other members of the tour group but not did not hear anything from her sister. So she went under looking for her. She was very brave.”
Though tourists who visit the coastal lagoon famous for its bioluminescence are often warned about the croc dangers, Sean insists that his daughters were not warned about the predators by their tourist agency before their group went for a swim at night.
