A woman tragically died after falling from a balcony of her apartment shortly after making her dreams come true.
30-year-old Lucy Whiteside was an animal lover who passed away just one week after moving from the UK to Mondragone, Italy, in order to start teaching English.
Ten days after the aspiring teacher and scriptwriter started her life at a two-bedroom apartment in the Italian commune, Lucy’s life came to a tragic end as she fell from her second-floor balcony.
As the inquest heard, the 30-year-old is believed to have fallen to her death after leaning over the fence of her balcony to check on the dogs that were barking in a neighboring apartment.
After falling to the ground, the English teacher allegedly suffered severe injuries. She was later declared dead.
“Lucy was living her dream. It was something she had planned for a long time and every day we spoke to her she was full of enthusiasm for the Italian way of life,” Carol Woodward, the teacher’s heartbroken mother, said.
“She lived opposite a monastery and said how the bells were ringing all the time and how nice she found that and how she was living the real Italian life.”
Lucy reportedly fell to her death just hours after speaking to her mother. As the inquest heard, the 30-year-old was planning on enjoying a movie just moments before she fell.
According to the Italian authorities, foul play is not suspected, whereas the door of Lucy’s apartment was locked upon the arrival of the police.
“She was the sort of daughter every parent would be proud to have and someone who had a lot to look forward to,” coroner Alan Walsh added.
“She was at an age where she was ready to settle down and she was fulfilling her dreams before settling down. She was someone who was looking forward to the future.”
Following the tragic accident, Lucy’s family dubbed the 30-year-old “a free spirit who loved to travel and was universally loved by everyone she met throughout her short but very full life.”
“She was a fiercely loyal friend and has left an indelible mark on many people’s lives. Family meant everything to Lucy and she was a dearly loved daughter, sister and the best auntie in the world to her three adored nephews,” the family expressed in a statement.
“She was also a fanatical lover and protector of all dogs and cats and a committed vegetarian … We will all continue to love and miss her forever – she has left a legacy of a life well lived.”
