Down’s Syndrome is a genetic condition that leaves people with intellectual and learning disabilities.
But many people with the condition live a fulfilling, independent and wonderful life.
55-year-old Freia David is one such person. She worked at the French fry station of McDonald’s in Massachusetts for 32 years. Freia served all customers with diligence and she was respected by her fellow coworkers.
Sadly, she passed away on April 30, the Boston Globe reported. But she managed to achieve many things in life.
Freia joined the Special Olympics and even received praise from Hillary Clinton. When she retired in 2016, she had become popular in the city.
In an interview with CBS Boston, she said: “It was nice, I’m really happy. I like all my friends here.”
In addition to her friends at work, the community also congratulated her. The notice said: “Freia was born to a loving family, having Down Syndrome, but this never slowed her down. She graduated from Needham High School, participated in Special Olympics, had many friends, and enjoyed music, movies, and Mickey Mouse.”
It continued: “For 32 years she worked at McDonald’s of Needham where she served up spectacular French fries, teased her co-workers, and greeted everyone with a smile.”
The notice also said that Freia’s retirement party “was so well publicized that she became a minor celebrity.”
The Boston Globe also shared an article about her when she retired and more than a hundred people attended her party.
The restaurant’s manager, Rony Sandoval, said: “When she sees any kids in the lobby, she started making fries and comes out and says ‘Hi sweetie.’ She’s a lovely, lovely girl.”
Another representative for the restaurant added: “Freia is a terrific employee. We learned a lot more from her than she could ever learn from us.”
