There’s a funny expression that goes, “It’s the best thing since sliced bread.” And that’s likely because people don’t have to worry about working through the (sometimes) thick and tough bread crust in order to enjoy the tasty doughy center.
Then again, some people do enjoy eating the end crusts although you’d hardly expect someone to find a whole loaf of them as one woman from Radcliffe-on-Trent in Nottinghamshire did.
Timea Ganji, 41, bought a loaf of Kingsmill sliced bread only to find out that it all contained end crusts after she tried to make sandwiches to pack into the lunchboxes of her children.
Speaking to the BBC, she said, “It’s not funny first thing in the morning when you have half an hour to get the kids to school and there’s no time to get another loaf.”
The mother-of-two continued: “It just looked like a normal loaf when we bought it.”
“Because of the yellow packaging, you can’t see it properly. You can see it’s sliced, but you couldn’t see it is all just crusts.”
“Then, in the morning, I just wanted some toast and to make sandwiches and I was just staring at it. I don’t really understand how it can happen.”
Ganji, who owns a restaurant, was so taken aback by her find that she even posted photos on Facebook. Her post generated comments from friends about old wives’ tales about the benefits of eating crusts.
“Maybe I’d like curly hair but I don’t want a hairy chest,” restaurant owner Ganji said.
“I don’t mind eating them. I love baguettes with butter on them, or an end of sourdough or tiger bread, but these ends are not as tasty.”
“You can’t make sandwiches with them and the kids won’t eat them.”
In order not to waste them, Ganji has thought of mixing them into a meatloaf or making breadcrumbs out of them.
In the meantime, Kingsmill is trying to get to the bottom of how a packet full of crusts made its way out of the bakery. However, they already sent her a “more conventional loaf.”
The company explained that their bakeries are self-contained and “would not allow for a loaf consisting solely of crusts to pass through their strict quality control processes.”
A Kingsmill spokeswoman also said the company was investigating “to find out how this particular collection of crusts found its way into Mrs. Ganji’s shopping.”
