Nathalia Freitas was born in Brazil with a rare condition called Congenital Melanocytic Nevus means she was born with a birthmark covering 40 percent of her face and scalp.
Nathalia underwent nine surgeries while growing up in Porto Alegre to remove the birthmark.
The surgeries left scars on one side of her face. However, Nathalia, who now lives in Los Angeles, has accepted her imperfections and now inspiring others.
She told Barcroft TV: “When I see myself in the mirror, I see a pretty woman. I love my hair, I love my eyebrow and my smile. To be born like this is just a condition, and the most important thing is that does not change anything. It doesn’t define who I am.”
Though she has accepted her imperfections now, it wasn’t easy when she was growing up as she would receive cruel comments from schoolmates.
Nathalia says that was the most difficult phase of her life.
She said: “When I was in school kids were very cruel and they would call me cruel names such as ‘ugly face’.
That was the hardest part of my life.
It was really hard for a pretty girl being called a monster. ”“But I started to think about what they were saying and realised that was just the way I was born. I didn’t choose to be like that.”
Eventually, she started feeling better and embraced herself. She now loves the way she is and has a positive attitude towards life.
She said: “When I started being more positive my life changed and everything became easier.”
Nathalia is now happy as she has embraced herself and is currently in a relationship with Geoff Clark who she met after moving to California.
She said: “I started using dating apps and that was challenging. I always made sure to use pictures that showed my face but that was not easy.”
“I had some situations where I talked to a guy and we’d have a good conversation and then we’d finally have a date in person and suddenly the guy would ask ‘what is that on your face? Is that makeup?’”
“I would tell them about my condition and scars and they would disappear and not talk to me anymore. That happened a couple of times and that was hard.”
Nathalia says Geoff is different from those guys and he doesn’t care about her scars.
The 32-year-old is now sharing her story on social media accounts to inspire people who also feel embarrassed by their appearances.
She has started her online brand ‘Loving My Dots’ and speaks at public events to motivate others.
