A 32-year-old woman fell and died while trying to take photos near a waterfall.
Sofia Cheung and her friends went to the Tsing Dai stream in Hong Kong on Saturday. However, their trip ended in tragedy after she lost her balance and fell to her death.
The group reportedly started their journey at around 11 am. The area they visited is popular with hikers, especially in the afternoon.
Cheung was taking photographs at the waterfall at around 5 pm when she slipped and fell 16ft into a 5-meter pool below.
Her friends immediately called emergency services and rescuers arrived on the scene.
She was taken to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital in Chai Wan where she was declared dead on arrival.
Cheung had 7,000 followers on Instagram where she regularly posted photos of herself out exploring, including risky images of herself on cliff edges and mountaintops.
Since the tragic news of her death, her friends took to social media and offered condolences, with one writing: “I will miss your chat every day. I love you always. Rest in peace my pretty Sofia.”
Cheung was not the only person to die while taking photos in a scenic area.
Last year, another woman was hiking through the Grampians National Park in Australia when she slipped and fell around 80 meters to her death after climbing over the railing to take photos.
Australian Police Minister Lisa Neville warned that safety features are there for a reason.
“That is dangerous behaviour, and yesterday should be a stark reminder that anyone who wants to do those extreme photos for social media, that it can kill you,” she said.
“No photo is worth a life,” the police minister added.
