A woman who ripped out both of her eyes in a drug-induced psychotic frenzy has received her first prosthetic eyes.
It was two years ago when Kaylee Muthart gouged her eyes out. She was rushed to a hospital in South Carolina where she was told that she would be blind for the rest of her life.
But the shocking incident helped her start a new chapter and stay on the right track as she managed to quit drugs for good.
Kaylee is now healthy and clean, and thanks to Dr. Joseph Gorrin, she recently received her first pair of prosthetic eyeballs.
The 22-year-old, who is now enrolled in a blind school, said: “I was so excited to get them. I just wanted to appear more normal to the outside world.”
Her boyfriend, 42-year-old Alex George, was there to witness the heartwarming moment.
Alex said: “It melted my heart. She was never any different to me, but I know she’s wanted this for a very long time and I’m so happy she has this now. I felt so much joy, love, appreciation and thanks to God.
“Seeing Kaylee happy makes me happy.
“She is always an upbeat and positive person, but this made her extra happy. It was incredible to be able to look in her eyes.”
The couple, who have known each other for five years, had dinner at Applebees to celebrate.
“That’s where we had our first date, so it’s a meaningful place for us,” Kaylee said. “Before we had dinner I put on my own makeup for the first time since I lost my sight, that felt very special.”
After her new prosthetic eyeballs were fitted, Kaylee showed her mother, Katy Tompskins, the beautiful result.
“She cried with happiness too,” Kaylee expressed. “She is so excited for me and this next chapter in my life.”
Kaylee said that she has started writing a book about her life.
“I’ve come such a long way from two years ago,” she said. “Coming off meth was awful, physically and mentally, there were hallucinations and psychosis, but I overcame it, thanks to God.”
