A woman is suing officials after claiming she was forced to give birth alone in a jail cell despite crying out for help numerous times.
Diana Sanchez, a former inmate, gave birth to baby Jordan on July 31, 2018, in Denver County jail. She was taken into custody two weeks earlier for identity theft-related charges.
The mother is now suing Denver city and county officials, saying she was left in agony without any support or any medical assistance.
CCTV footage showed the woman screaming in pain as she gave birth to her child after guards refused to call an ambulance or come to her aid even though she informed them she was going into labor 6 hours before.
“I felt helpless. Nobody was helping me. There were so many people there and nobody lifted a finger basically,” she told KDVR.
“That pain, it’s just, it’s indescribable. What hurts me more is the fact that nobody cared.”
Sanchez and her lawyers filed a lawsuit and claim staff knew she was in labor but decided not to take her to a hospital.
Denver Sherrif Department launched an internal investigation and a spokesperson said to KDVR it concluded deputies “took the appropriate actions under the circumstances and followed the relevant policies and procedures.”
“Policy has since been clarified that when an inmate is in labour, an emergency ambulance will be called,” the spokesperson added.
Sanchez’s attorney said she was ‘profoundly disappointed’ by the investigation.
“That’s just emblematic of how broken the system really is,” she told The Washington Post.
“They claim to have done a review and their conclusion is that nothing was wrong with the fact that a woman was never taken to the hospital and ended up giving birth in a dirty, cold, hard jail cell. It’s really unfathomable.”
