The 27-year-old woman who fell down a 50ft waterfall captured the terrifying moment with her GoPro.
Heather Friesen was in a Hawaii trip with her friends when she stopped at the top of a 50ft waterfall on the Ka’au Crater Trail. After a few seconds, she slipped and tumbled down the side of the clib, falling into the raging water below.
She broke ten ribs, fractured her shoulder blade and suffered a collapsed lung after she lost her balance at the edge of the cliff.
Video from her GoPro has been shared online.
In the footage, she can be heard screaming in pain as she tried to swim across the river. A man rushed to her help and pulled her out of the water.
The survivor, a beach volleyball player, talked about her ordeal on the ‘In the World of Female Sports’ podcast.
“The hike has waterfalls and we were on the first waterfall and I was up at the top trying to look over the edge and I got too close and I ended up slipping,” Heather said.
“You can see there’s little trickle of water that was in the shadow that I didn’t really see.”
Heather said that she felt as if time slowed down while she was falling from the top. She was airlifted to hospital and all she could think of was her friends from church and her Christian beliefs.
“When I was on the helicopter being airlifted out, it was the most peaceful moment of my life,” she shared.
“I kept repeating to myself, ‘God’s got me, I’m going to be OK’ and that I’m going to play volleyball again.”
She added: “I found out there had been others before me who fell from the same spot and died, and I know that God saved my life that day.”
