Bethany said she was left with swollen fingers and a fungal infection after getting a manicure at a nail salon in North Carolina.

She got a dip powder manicure on October 17 but within a week, her fingers started to swell, bleed and ooze with pus.

According to her doctor, she probably contracted a fungal infection as she had been dipping her nails into the same powder many other customers had used.

Dip powder manicure is a method in which a customer selects a color and the nail is dipped into container of powder. Then, the manicurist will brush off the excess powder and applies a protective coating. The steps can be repeated until the polish has hardened.

Bethany said that while the manicurist was filing her nails, one of her fingers was accidentally cut. Even so, her fingers were still dipped into the jar of powder.

“I noticed about a week later I had a little spots go up [around a few nails] and tried creams over-the-counter and then soaked them in alcohol and peroxide and it just kept getting worse,” Bethany told WFMY.

She also showed photos, which showed her swollen and bleeding fingers.

Experts warned that customers should not be dipping their fingers into the powder containers provided by salons as bacteria can stay in the powder for weeks.

Lynda Elliot, the executive director of the North Carolina Board of Cosmetic Art Examinrs, said to WFMY: “Our rules are very clear indicating once a product has come into contact with the client, it has to be thrown away.”

Experts also said that nail technicians should either use a clean brush to apply the powder on customers’ nails or pour the powder.
