22-year-old Ashleigh Cope finally woke up after she contracted a flesh-eating bacterial infection that stopped her heart on Thanksgiving day.
It took eight surgeries to get rid of dying tissue, and she is now making remarkable progress, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
Ashleigh’s mom, Andrea Cope, also said to the Review-Journal: “She is truly a miracle and beating the odds.”
The 22-year-old cosmetologist had undergone an outpatient surgery in a Nevada clinic and before Thanksgiving day, she became ill and was rushed to a hospital.
It was discovered that Ashleigh had contracted necrotizing fasciitis.
Her heart stopped on Thanksgiving and she had been on life support. It was thought that her chance of survival was slim that her family and friends were told to say their final goodbyes.
“It just snowballed,” Andrea expressed. “They gave us almost no chance of survival for her.”
The 22-year-old was then moved to a burn and trauma center to provide her with the best chance of survival.
Ashleigh’s uncle, Doug Cope, described her battle as ‘hour by hour.’
“Everyone was saying their goodbyes,” Heather DeLong, a family friend, told the Review-Journal. “She’s spunky and sassy and sweet and smart and beautiful.”
But Ashleigh surprised her family and the medical team when she finally woke up.
“Today, Ashleigh woke up feeling strong and determined. With assistance she was able to stand and move her legs for the first time today,” her family wrote on a GoFundMe page set up for her.
One internet user commented: “My husband was in a medical coma two days as he had that and toxic shock syndrome. But the nurses and occupational had him up and walking on 4th day, and his whole upper thigh was affected. The bbs were brilliant.”
Another wrote: “Keep fighting pretty lady! Lots of people are pulling for you!”
