A woman reportedly invited 23 of her family members on her blind date after the man she was messaging offered to pay for dinner.
The bizarre incident took place in China where a 29-year-old man known as Mr. Liu was confronted by a massive bill after his date brought 23 relatives together with her for a dinner.
According to Taizhou Evening News, Liu fled the restaurant where they were eating after receiving a whopping $3,000 bill.
As the local media reported, Liu offered to pay for his date’s dinner in advance. However, he had no idea that the woman he was about to see was ready to invade the restaurant together with nearly two dozen family members and expect him to pay for everyone.
After what was supposed to be a romantic dinner for two turned into an unruly feast, Liu fled the restaurant much to the shock of his date and her family.
As the woman, who chose to remain anonymous, told the local media, she wanted to see if her potential partner would be generous enough to pay for the food of her relatives.
Since Mr. Liu clearly failed the test, however, his date and her relatives were forced to settle the $3,000 bill themselves.
Following the incident, Liu and his blind date agreed that the man would contribute by paying for a portion of the expensive dinner.
After the story went viral, people were quick to start a heated debate on social media whereas users couldn’t agree whether the man was right for fleeing the restaurant or not.
“Usually the woman would bring one or two friends in case it gets awkward. We as gentlemen should pay,” one person wrote. “If the woman bring seven or eight people, you should just leave. She wasn’t genuine anyway.”
“Men should pay out of curtsey. But bring 23 people to the meal is unacceptable,” another one added.
