A woman has married the man who helped save her when bullets started flying around during the mass shooting in Las Vegas that cost 59 people their lives years ago.
According to PEOPLE, Chantal Melanson and Austin Monfort first gazed upon each other on September 30, 2017, when they met at a bar in Las Vegas.
After turning down her suitor when he asked her to dance, Chantal decided to go with the flow and agree when Austin attempted to convince her to dance with him for the second time.
Following hours of dancing and chatting, the pair exchanged numbers and met once again on the following night to see the performers at the Route 91 Harvest music festival.
“We were just listening to music having a good time,” Mr. Monfort said in an interview with PEOPLE.
“Until we realized that the noises weren’t fireworks, they were gunshots. Then it became, ‘Am I going to survive this, how much longer until police can make it stop, and how do we get out of here?’”
As the man admitted, he felt responsible for his date and wanted to make sure she got away to safety by keeping her calm and guiding her away from the crowd.
“I remember laying on the ground just looking into Austin’s eyes, trying to make sense of everything. Next thing I knew, Austin was holding my hand and we were running through the entire grounds trying to make it to safety,” Melanson told PEOPLE.
After the successful escape, the pair remained together until the next day when they went their separate ways.
Despite returning to their own lives, the two remained in contact and, soon enough, love between the two began to flourish.
Less than two years after the tragedy took place, the couple got engaged and later tied the knot in the court.
“In many ways, he did save my life,” Melanson concluded.
