Kevin Fox, a bystander, was at a smaller observation deck on the south rim of the canyon. From his vantage point, he could see the 20-year-old Emily backing up constantly in order to capture more of the scenery in the photo.
So focused was Emily on taking the picture that she didn’t notice she was already dangerously close to the edge which had no guardrail. Suddenly, her right foot slips and almost topples her over the edge and into the rocks below.
By sheer luck, she manages to catch her balance by putting both hands on the ground. Emily’s relieved mom rushes in to hug her.
Kevin said: “I wanted to show my kids what not to do. I didn’t realize what was going to happen.
“I had taken a picture and then started a video because I wanted to show the full extent of the danger.
“I show what is below and then come back up to see them walking around on the edge.
“I’m very thankful that both ladies are doing well.”
Kevin and a friend were planning to make a run at the Grand Canyon the next day. After the incident, he managed to encounter the pair and explained to them that he caught the whole thing on video.
He said: “They were laughing— but in a nervous way.
“We realized we were both from Texas and then we went on.”
Emily had wanted to take a full-body photograph of her mom which explains why she kept backing up.
Erin told local news outlets: “I saw that the ledge was right there and I said, ‘don’t take another step back.’
“Twice I said that.
“My stomach went up into my chest.
“I was scared and angry all at the same time, so I just went up and grabbed her.”
