A woman was left paralyzed just hours after doctors assured her that her numb arm was caused by nothing more than anxiety.
Sonia Vera is a former Venezuelan model who’s been living in London for several years.
One day, the 46-year-old woman rushed to the hospital fearing that she might have suffered a heart attack after experiencing a worrying sensation in her arm.
While the doctors assured Vera that the tingling sensation will pass and that it was caused by mere anxiety, the model found herself paralyzed from the waist down just hours after her return home as she woke up from a nap.
After returning to the hospital, Vera underwent a series of tests whereas the doctors eventually diagnosed her with a rare neurological disorder known as transverse myelitis.
Following months of physiotherapy and treatment aimed to reduce the inflammation of her spinal cord, the former TV personality remains positive despite facing challenges on a daily basis.
“Physically it’s been tough of course. I struggle with one whole side of my body that doesn’t really respond on dry land, yet there are signs of messages coming and going when I am in a pool,” Vera said.
“I have neuro pain in my right arm that is constant and then there are all the challenges of everyday life, like getting around and reaching for things.
“Mentally, I’m ok. I’ve had my lows and then I just pop right back up. I do meditation in the morning to calm any anxiety and then I mostly focus on my physio and being positive. Having faith is important.
“I have my good days and my bad days. But as I see it, I feel that there must be some lesson to be taken away from this experience and so I just try and live in the ‘now’ every day and take it one day at a time.”
