Cheryl Wallace volunteers at the Town and Country Humane Society in Papillion, Nebraska.
When she plays cello to sooth stressful dogs, puppies close their eyes to take a nap while older dogs lay down to relax.
It really helps to calm the anxious and depressed dogs.
“Now, if you were playing in a concert hall and your audience went to sleep you might be insulted, but for me, that is a high compliment,” Wallace told KETV.
She wrote on her website – Cello4Dogs: “While playing my cello for dogs, I have seen feral dogs’ behavioral changes. One slowly revealed himself for the first time, coming out of his hiding place, and another allowed a caregiver to stroke the length of his body for the first time.”
“Although I cannot hear myself play over the barking at first, it ceases after a while, and the dogs return to a calmer state even when caregivers or visitors enter.”
Craig DenHerder, director of operations at the Town and Country Humane Society in Papillion, said: “It seems to be helping them, today they were about half asleep in the kennels.”
Wallace’s wrote on her website:
“My mission is to encourage others to help shelter dogs by playing live cello music for them. Nearly 3.3 million dogs enter shelters in the US each year. They give us so much as faithful companions and service dogs. This is an opportunity to give something to them.”
