A 26-year-old woman has been accused of faking cancer in order to raise funds from her own friends and family members.
Alysha Rose Goring from Caroline Springs, Australia, has stolen nearly $10,000 from her closest allies under the pretense that she’s suffering from the deadly disease.
The 26-year-old obtained the large sum of money in less than a month last year after pleading with her family and friends for financial help.
According to the statements from the court hearing, the woman intends to plead guilty to obtaining property by deception. She is set to reappear in court in April.
“As a result, a large number of family, friends and associates donated more than $9000 by way of direct debit or cash donations,” the spokesman for the police said.
While cancer-faking scammers are on the rise, another deceitful 24-year-old was jailed last year after pleading guilty to several charges of obtaining property by deception.
Cancer scammer Hanna Dickenson was jailed for three months before an appeal landed her a 2-year community corrections order and 200 hours of community work.
Hanna had been deceiving her friends and family and told them she needed to pay for a costly treatment abroad to survive the disease. This way, she was able to steal over $40,000 between 2013 and 2014.
The fraud master even set up a bank account under the fake name of a doctor whom she alleged to had been accepting donations in her name.
Thanks to donations and kind people, the 24-year-old was able to live a lavish lifestyle and blew all of the money on drugs, alcohol, and trips.
Another notorious Australian cancer scammer is Belle Gibson, a 27-year-old who built a social media empire based on fake claims saying she cured brain cancer via alternative therapies which she presented in her cookbook.
Gibson was able to scam over 300,000 cancer patients and obtained hundreds of thousands from selling lies to the needy. Despite being threatened with jail time and fined $410,000 in 2017, the 27-year-old never apologized or returned a single stolen dollar up to date.
