Kayla Denney received an award after reducing an animal shelter’s kill rate from 100 percent to 0%.
It was only last November when Denny took over the shelter in Taft, Texas. At that time, the shelter was failing to look for homes for its dogs and cats, resulting in a 100% kill rate.
But since she took over, the rate fell to 0 percent, with 565 cats and dogs finding forever homes.
Denney has received Petco’s 2019 National ‘Unsung Hero’ Award, thanks to her incredible and lifesaving changes.
In an interview with KZTV, Denney said: “There are thousands of applicants, I didn’t know I was nominated.
“I became the 2019 unsung hero for the country so one person in the whole United States and it still just blows my mind that that’s still a thing.”
Only four months into the job, Denny was already among the top 5 contenders for the award. She also received $10,000 and an additional $25,000 for winning the first place.
The kindhearted woman told KZTV that the money will be reinvested into the shelter.
“It’s an older shelter and its run down,” Denney said. “We got lights thanks to a donor who put in electricity for us, but I want indoor outdoor kennels with a guillotine in between so when it’s raining we can put them inside.”
Denney also shared her plans for the future of the shelter. She told KZTV: “We want an area where they can have meet and greet out in the field and somewhere, they can have grass time rather than just cement time.”
