Online ordering like the one popularized by Amazon is one of the best things that has happened with the rapid spread of the Internet. It’s not only about the convenience of doing your shopping from the comfort of your home with just a few clicks and just waiting for them to arrive at your doorstep like manna from heaven. They’re also a distinct advantage for people with disabilities who may find it difficult to keep going out of the house to buy essentials.
While online stores have been a boon to package delivery companies, it has also given rise to another type of predator: porch thieves. In truth, people have been stealing delivered packages from porches ever since the concept of home delivery has been invented. But the sheer volume of packages being delivered now makes those porches quite lucrative targets and something that is hard to guard against.
Of course, some victims have taken to installing CCTV cameras in the hopes of submitting a snapshot of the thief’s face or perhaps even their getaway vehicle’s plate number to the police. More creative homeowners have even installed stuff like loudspeakers or alarms in the hopes of scaring these thieves away.
But one homeowner managed to capture a satisfying case of instant karma when a woman who attempted to steal packages off the porch slipped and fell, managing to hurt herself in the process.
The incident happened on January 26, 2018, in Bothell, Washington. In the footage, the UPS van can be observed delivering the packages and leaving them on the porch. Just scant moments after, a car pulls up in front of the house and a female passenger gets out to snatch the newly-delivered packages.
Despite the obvious weight of the package, the woman attempts to make a dash for the car so that she loses her footing on the grass and badly sprains her ankle as she falls down.
The woman is in so much pain that she can’t get up on her own so the male driver had to get out of the car and carry her back to their vehicle. But the mishap doesn’t deter them from their evil intentions and the man returns to pick up the package lay on the lawn.
It’s bad enough if the stolen package was some sort of expensive appliance but homeowner Lizeth Ababneh said that one of the packages that were stolen contained medication that her husband needed.
She has filed charges at the Snohomish County Sheriff’s office in the hopes that the ensuing investigation will lead to the arrest of the porch thieves.
