An internet user was left stunned after discovering dozens of socks that had been missing for what appears to be months or years.
As Reddit user u/lexsi04 revealed in her post, she discovered that her washing machine had been eating her clothes after taking a closer look at the device.
While most people lose or misplace socks from time to time, not many of us actually manage to find the missing pieces.
Sometimes, they might be taken away by our beloved pets while in other cases they might end up behind the cabinet.
As the people in this story realized, however, socks can also pile up inside the secret parts of washing machines. After inspecting her washing machine and its rubber gasket, one homeowner found dozens of socks hidden in the tight gap between the drum and frame of the machine.
Throughout the years, other people kept on making similar discoveries and sharing photos of the haul online.
As experts have explained, socks and other smaller pieces of clothing can get sucked beneath the seal designed to keep water from escaping the front-loading washing machines during a washing cycle. Clothes, however, can also be eaten by top-loading washing machines.
To stop clothes from going missing, experts suggest you avoid overloading the washing machines. In addition, you can also frequently inspect the rubber gasket while the machine is not in operation.
“The smell is usually far beyond disgusting.
(they smell every bit as good as that discoloration looks) After the first time, you always check under the gasket of your front loader after running a load of laundry,” someone wrote after a Reddit user known as u/benknowsbest shared a picture of dozens of socks he found in his washing machine.“Careful. If you delve much further you could end up in Narnia,” another one wrote.
One person said: “I can’t imagine how it would be after never checking it before. I check mine with each load I move, and I’m disgusted by the ones that are stuck in there just from that load. They’re all slimy and not clean, it’s gross.”
