A woman has sued McDonald’s and accused them of breaking her fast with the help of their cheeseburger advert.
The bizarre case takes place in Omsk, Russia, where Ksenia Ovchinnikova was fasting during Lent, a religious observance, until she saw a McDonald’s ad showing a delicious cheeseburger.
While the woman was doing her best to stay away from meat products during her fast, she couldn’t resist McDonald’s food after seeing their ad.
Now, Ovchinnikova is seeking $14 in compensation, whereas she went on to sue the fast-food chain for offending her religious feelings and allegedly violating the consumer protection law.
As the woman insists, McDonald’s is the one to blame for her ruined fast because they advertised meat products during the time of religious observance.
“By this point, I had already been fasting for a month, but when I saw an advertising banner, I could not help myself, I visited McDonald’s and bought a cheeseburger,” she says.
“In the actions of McDonald’s, I see a violation of the consumer protection law. I ask the court to investigate and, if a violation has taken place, to oblige McDonald’s LLC to compensate me for moral damage in the amount of one thousand rubles [$14].”
According to Ovchinnikova, she had been successfully fasting during Lent for the last 16 years and this was the first time she couldn’t resist meat.
As reported by Oddity Central, the Zamoskvoretsky press service confirmed that the date for the preliminary hearing on the bizarre case has yet to be determined.
