A woman claimed she only swiped right for her boyfriend’s pug on the dating app Bumble.
Kayla Moyes stumbled across a math teacher Sam Taylor’s profile in November 2017 and got fascinated to see the photos of his pug Gary.
Kayla who is a PR Executive had moved to Cardiff, Wales, to do media management degree and she was longing for her own pet Trixy who was at her home in Vancouver Island, Canada.
She admitted that she wouldn’t have swiped right if Sam hadn’t posted the pictures of Gary as she was more interested in his pet. She said: ”If Sam hadn’t posted a picture of Gary on his Bumble profile, I wouldn’t have swiped right.”
“He wasn’t my type at all – but he did have a picture of him with a cute dog. At the time, I was suffering from homesickness and was missing my pet cockapoo Bichon, Trixy, who was back home in Canada.
“So, I thought, ‘If I swipe right for this guy and end up going on one date, then at least I can pet his dog.’ I knew it wouldn’t be a complete waste of time if we didn’t get along.”
Kayla’s grandparents live in Newport so it was easy for her to relocate there to study an MBA at the University of Cardiff in August 2017. After getting busy with her studies, she was left lonely as most of her time was spent in studying.
She decided to join dating app Bumble in November 2017 and destiny made her meet Sam. “It was difficult to make friends because my university course was very much ‘Get your head down and get stuck into books,” she said.
“After a while, the excitement of living in Cardiff wore off and I was all too aware that I was a 13-hour flight away from home. I really didn’t like the idea of meeting guys out in a bar, because I’m not a big drinker.’’
“I thought on dating apps I might have more of a chance of meeting someone with similar interests to me, so I downloaded Bumble.”
After spending time on the app for seven days, she finally swiped right on Sam’s profile only for his pooch. They chatted for three weeks online and finally made a plan to meet. They had their first date in December 2017, where they went on a walk together and Kayla was extremely amazed by Sam’s good sense of humor.
She said: ‘’Considering I’d only swiped right because of his pug, we had a lot in common. We both loved hiking and had actually been on the same hike, up the Garth Mountain in Wales, within days of each other – which is quite a big coincidence.”
‘’Since then, the pair, who became an official couple in February 2018, have gone from strength to strength.’’
She told Sam that his pet Gary was the only reason she swiped for him and the couple laughed at it. Kayla admitted if there was not a picture of Gary on Sam’s account she would have returned to Canada by now.
“I have told Sam that Gary was the reason I swiped for him,” she said. “But we just laugh about it and think of it as fate. I do think I had subconsciously been looking to meet a man with a dog. That one picture of Sam and Gary changed my life – if he hadn’t posted that picture, I would be back home in Canada by now.
“Sam’s definitely had a glow up since I’ve been with him – all the hikes mean he’s lost weight, and he’s got a better haircut. I’ve tried to help him out with his fashion choices too. But even still, I wouldn’t change him or Gary for the world – I’m the happiest I’ve ever been.”
The love between the couple blossomed soon and they moved in together in August 2019. Kayla added: “I fell for Sam quickly because I didn’t really have many friends or family in the UK. We started taking Gary on three hikes a week and our love blossomed from there.”
In April 2018, Kayla’s pet Trixy, 14, passed away as she suffered a tumor in her body and head. Kayla received great support from Sam and Gary during this difficult time of her life.
“Losing a pet is like losing a family member,” she said. “But Sam did all he could to help me, and Gary is so clever. He must’ve known I was down because he was always coming over to me for cuddles.”
The couple transformed a van gifted by Sam’s mom Yvonne, 64, into their very own home. “We built everything from scratch, installing a bed, cooking section and all the usual mod-cons you’d get in a campervan,” Kayla said.
After completing the renovation, they traveled the country in their van with their pet Gary. “At the moment, Sam and I – with Gary of course – travel across the UK every chance we get,” said Kayla.
“We’ve been to Dorset, Edinburgh, Cornwall, the Lake District – and we’ve covered every inch of Wales. Eventually we want to quit our jobs and go on a worldwide road trip. The dream would be to go to North America – but we need to save up for that.”
