A woman has been arrested after she was caught on camera dumping seven newborn puppies in the trash bin in Coachella.
A few days back, a video of a woman pulling up in a jeep and throwing a plastic bag into a trash bin behind a shop in Coachella, California was released by the Riverside County Animal Services.
The plastic bag that she threw had seven newborn puppies in it.
Now, the woman named Deborah Sue Culwell, 54, has been arrested and is facing up to seven counts of felony animal cruelty.
She was held by Riverside County Animal Services Commander Chris Mayer at her Coachella home on Monday.
Police found 30 dogs in her home. The dogs are now being cared for at a shelter in Thousand Palms.
Culwell was caught on CCTV camera throwing a bag of seven newborn puppies into a trash bin in Coachella.
A good Samaritan named John found the puppies in the trash bin outside a Napa Auto Parts store and rescued them.
Authorities said the puppies may not have survived had they not been found within an hour of being dumped due to the 90-degree heat.
Department of Animal Services Commander Chris Mayer said: “The good Samaritan played a major role in saving these puppies’ lives. His actions were humane and heroic.”
“There is no excuse for dumping puppies. Especially in today’s age when we or other shelters would be willing to get these animals to foster parents or rescue partners. This was a shameful act.”
John Welsh, the chief of the Riverside County Department of Animal Services said: “You can clearly see the bag of puppies being dumped into the dumpster. There’s clearly not a level of intelligence that’s going to be used if you’re going to toss animals.”
The puppies are now at an Orange County rescue shelter.
