A young woman was arrested after vandalizing a man’s grave and leaving behind an infuriating note in which she mocked his death.
25-year-old Simona Julius has been sentenced to eight weeks in prison after mocking the death of 22-year-old Liam Scarman who died from a hypo several years ago.
According to the reports, the young woman visited the man’s grave in Bristol, UK, only to smear paint over the headstone and leave behind a disgusting note in which she made fun of his death.
“Ha ha ha Liam. Looks like diabetes won again. P***yhole bruv,” she wrote on the note.
As the court learned after the story went viral, Julius not only vandalized Scarman’s grave but also went on to harass his family by sending them Christmas cards with offensive messages.
Following her arrest, Julius never revealed why she targeted the 22-year-old’s grave and his family, whereas the motive behind the disturbing actions remains unclear as of this writing.
Sentencing Julius to eight weeks in prison, a Bristol Magistrates Court judge called her actions “wicked” and “perplexing.” On top of her sentence, the 25-year-old was also given a restraining order and was ordered to pay $700 in compensation to Liam’s family.
As Sue Witt, Liam’s mom, explained in a statement to the court, Simona’s actions and words caused major distress to the entire family.
“Losing a child is the worst possible grief you could imagine. It has consumed my life. Having found out that somebody had damaged Liam’s grave just compounded all those emotions and undid the progress I had made in dealing with his death,” she expressed.
“I think people are wondering what kind of person Liam was, how horrible a person he must have been for somebody to damage his grave the way they did, when in reality everybody who knew him loved him.”
She added: “I never knew him to do anything nasty or horrible to anybody. I don’t understand why she did it.”
Meanwhile, Liam’s dad, Trevor Scarman, admitted that the attack on his son’s grave caused severe emotional damage that will take a long time to repair.
“The physical damage has been repaired but the emotional damage will take far longer to repair. It’s like someone is sticking a knife in and twisting it,” he said.
“Our family are completely distraught. To commit an act of criminal damage like this along with vile notes addressed to me has left me feeling devastated.”
