The robotic dog was developed by Boston Dynamics, an engineering and robotics design company that developed a model called ‘Spot’ back in 2015.

Since then, the model has been optimized and used to help the NYC police deal with risky crime scenes and assist Massachusetts doctors in battling coronavirus.

In the summer of 2020, Spot has also gone public, whereas the company announced that private citizens could now also get their hands on the unusual pet for the price of $74,500.

According to the company’s description, Spot has been optimized both for outdoor and indoor use. The robot dog is capable of avoiding obstacles, mapping the environment, and recording the surroundings. It also obeys commands such as stopping and sitting and knows how to open doors and climb stairs.

While Spot can be deployed to patrol areas or embark on tasks in a hazardous environment, the robot dog in this story is used as a pet and even has its own YouTube channel where its owner shares videos of their adventures.

With their functions and capabilities constantly being developed and improved, one can’t help but wonder if robot dogs will replace our furry companions in the future.
