A 35-year-old woman, from Melbourne, Australia, was told she’s not mother material after suffering a stroke at 19 that left her unable to walk and talk.
Emma Gaffy suffered a stroke when she was 19 and was forced to learn how to walk and talk again.
She was left with many health problems after suffering the stroke and was told by the doctors she was wasn’t “mother material”.
However, Emma has now proved everyone wrong after giving birth to her first child.
Emma gave birth to a baby girl Meadow earlier this year who is now nine-week-old.
Recently, Emma talked about the impact of the stroke on her life and her experience of being a mum in an interview with The Stroke Foundation.
She said it was a dream come true when she gave birth to Meadow earlier this year and defied the doctors who told her she wasn’t “mother material”.
When she was asked how the stroke has impacted her life, Emma told that she still struggles in her day-to-day life.
She said: “Post-stroke fatigue is an issue so [Gareth] is doing the night feeds, while I get my rest.”
Emma said the experience of the stroke will also affect her parenting. She said: “All of the emotions, struggles, and strength I needed in my recovery, I’ll eventually rely on while parenting.”
“Especially when Meadow becomes a stubborn and strong-minded teenager – similar to her own mummy!”
The coronavirus outbreak has also affected Emma and her partner Gareth. She says midwives and family members are not allowed to visit them and she becomes emotional sometimes amid lockdown.
She says she is not getting the support and help that a new mother needs in order to take care of her newborn.
Despite all the struggles, Emma is happy she could defy odds and became a mother.
She says: “It’s surreal to me that I am mother to this gorgeous being, so I guess I’m still thanking her for choosing me to be her mummy.”
