A 33-year-old woman, from Hamble, near Southampton, gave birth in the Sainsbury’s car park as there was no time to make it to the hospital.
Hannah Howells and her 37-year-old husband, Andy were a couple of miles from Princess Anne Hospital in Southampton, Hants when Hannah told Andy, ‘the baby is coming right now’.
The couple saw an ambulance going in the opposite direction and Andy waved at them.
But, the paramedics thought they were appreciating them for their work amid coronavirus crisis and they simply waved back.
That’s when Andy parked their car in the Sainsbury’s car park and dialed 999. The call handler helped Andy deliver the baby while the Sainsbury’s store manager made sure no other cars could drive in when Hannah was giving birth.
A few minutes later, the couple welcomed their baby who weighed 6lbs 7oz and has now named him Wilf Tomas Howells.
Andy said: “The Sainsbury’s is probably only about three or four minutes away from the hospital in the end.”
“We couldn’t have done it without the call-handler’s help. She was incredible. She guided us through the whole thing.”
Hannah said the store manager and the call handler really helped them while a kind man who was buying flowers for his wife gave Hannah a bunch of flowers.
The ambulance that waved back at them thinking the couple was showing their appreciation returned and took them to the hospital.
Hannah said: “It’s all been an absolute whirlwind. It’s so surreal. I’ll never forget hearing ‘congratulations, your baby was born at 10.47am’ down the phone.”
She described the experience as magical and incredible and said it was a special moment for her. She thanked the people who helped her deliver the baby.
Wilf, who has been doing great and is super healthy, has been described as a trooper and incredibly calm.
