A woman was forced to shut her waxing salon down after an LGBT activist and a transgender filed a report and accused her of discrimination because she refused to shave her male genitals.
Marcia Da Silva, who is a Brazilian immigrant living and working in Canada, was forced to put an end to her waxing salon after LGBT supporter Jessica Yaniv, previously known as Jonathan Yaniv, accused her of “gender identity” discrimination.
According to the reports, Yaniv filed a report and sought financial compensation not only from Silva but also from 15 other estheticians who refused to service her.
Following the incident, Marcia spoke out and revealed that the incident led her to the point where she was forced to close her business.
As she added, she didn’t refuse service “because of the claimant’s identity,” but “due to safety concerns raised by her husband and alleged harassment on Yaniv’s part.”
Speaking of the related cases, attorney Jay Cameron, who also represents Silva, said:
“Some of my clients have been very significantly affected on a personal level. [Another client also] closed her business, she has been depressed, anxious, sleepless and that has gone on for a period of many many months.
“It is a very serious thing to launch a human rights complaint against a person. My clients are people. They have a right to make a living and this has interfered with their livelihood, but also you have the stigma of being associated with this hanging over you.”
Defending her decision to sue several business owners for refusing to wax her male genitals, Yaniv tweeted:
“This is not about waxing. This is about businesses and individuals using their religion and culture to refuse service to protected groups because — they — don’t agree with it or the person and use that to illegally discriminate contrary to the BC Human Rights Code and the CHRC.”
