A woman who was born with 20 toes and 12 fingers shares her story of how society treats her as an outcast and calls her a witch because of her condition.
Kumar Nayak is a 63 years old woman from India who has a medical condition called polydactyly. This condition affects humans to grow abnormal numbers on their hands and feet.
Kumar lives in Ganjam village in the Indian state of Odisha. She is old and says that she has no money at all. Being so poor she is not able to get a treatment for her condition which makes it even worse for her and with no other choice she has to live with the condition.
Because of her condition, she has 12 fingers and 20 toes on her feet which makes her abnormal. Because of this, she says that neighbors demean her and calls her a witch restricting her inside her house.
She does not get out of her house because people fail to understand her medical condition.
She says “I was born with this condition and being poor I could never get treated for it. My neighbors call me a witch and treat me pathetically. I have been living this way all my life.
Sometimes people come to see my condition and it makes it even worse. I cannot get out of my home because of how people treat me.”
One of her neighbors said “ I understand that she has a medical condition and the belief people have on her is absurd. She is not a witch. I feel so sorry for what she has to go through every day.”
This is not the first time people have been treating a human with an abnormal condition as in villages calling humans witch is common. In African villages, young boys are stated to be a witch and then they are left on the street to be on their own or die.
