Anyone who has ever been a passenger manages to fall asleep on the way if the trip lasts long enough. Of course, sleep a little too well and you risk missing your stop and having to go through the hassle of making the round trip back.
You would think such a problem would be practically non-existent when flying with an airline because you can rest assured that the cabin crew would make sure to wake you up just before touchdown. After all, it’s standard procedure that before takeoff and landing, seats should be upright, seat trays should be secured, and passengers buckled up.
But there’s a first time for everything and one woman had the unfortunate “honor” of being the first airline passenger to be left stranded inside the plane after she fell asleep in the middle of her flight.
The hapless woman, who was in an Air Canada flight from Quebec to Toronto, said that she fell asleep for the 90-minute flight on June 9,2019. But when she woke up, she found herself in a dark, empty, and worse, locked plane in the middle of the tarmac.
She was still buckled up and was “freezing cold” in “complete darkness.”
Such customer service mishaps are prime Facebook material and this woman was no different, recounting on the social media platform that she immediately tried to call her friend but her phone died and had no way to charge it because the plane’s power was already off.
She continued: “I can’t charge my phone to call for help I’m full on panicking [because] I want off this nightmare asap.
“As someone with an anxiety disorder as is, I can tell you how terrifying this was. I think I’m having a bad dream bc like seriously how is this happening!!?”
Rummaging through the plane’s cockpit, she managed to find a flashlight and made her way to the main door. She managed to pry the door open but was stumped by a 50-foot drop to the tarmac.
She then sat with her legs dangling out the door and waving her flashlight around until a baggage handler finally noticed her predicament.
Her post continued: “He is in shock asking how the heck they left me on the plane… I’m wondering the same (when my seat is an inch back or my tray is down flight crew take notice, but yet you missed a person still strapped into her seat and just all go on home?!?!).”
The baggage handler then accompanied her to the airport building where Air Canada representatives received her.
The poor woman must have developed some form of PTSD because she says she still experiences “night terrors” and “waking up anxious and afraid I’m alone locked up someplace dark.”
An Air Canada spokesperson confirmed the incident with The Independent and said that airline was still in touch with the passenger and reviewing what happened.
