Before being hospitalized, Anna Fortunato from Long Island, New York, had symptoms of the common cold including sore throat and mild fever.

However, her condition deteriorated, and she had to be shifted to a hospital from her assisted living home, her daughter Teresa Gund told the Associated Press.

After she reached the hospital, Anna called her daughter on Facetime using a nurse’s phone.

“She says, ‘Don’t you worry,’” Gund recalled the conversation she had with her mother on Facetime. “‘I will be fine. I have all the faith in God … and God is going to get me through this.

Novel coronavirus started spreading across the globe in December and it was noted that people aged above 50 are more vulnerable to it.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention advised senior citizens to remain indoors to decrease the chances of getting the deadly virus.

At one point, Anna’s condition deteriorated so much that her daughter asked the doctors to call a priest to the hospital to give Anna her final rites.

However, the doctors deemed calling a priest to the hospital “too risky.”

Out of options for treating Anna, doctors administered doses of anti-malaria medicine hydroxychloroquine to her as a desperate try to help her recover.

Hydroxychloroquine, known by the brand name Plaquenil, is primarily an anti-malarial but is also used in the treatment of lupus.

There is no evidence of the drug actually working for coronavirus, but some experts believe it can help. It is the same drug Donald Trump endorsed for treating corona a few days back.

The medicine worked like a magic spell in Anna’s case. Unexpectedly, she started recovering from her condition and was finally released from the hospital after about two weeks.

Anna is now planning to give time to her family and will be throwing a party for her 91st birthday this June.

“I had a good husband, and my children are beautiful,” Anna told the AP. “I’ve lived to see grandchildren and great-grandchildren … so I AM fortunate.”
