Caley Robinson, from Charlwood Village, Surrey came back to her home and discovered it was wrecked by her former best friend Katie Morrison, 32.
The 34-year-old woman was stunned to see the condition of her house as she found out her TV, coffee machine and even rugs had been stolen. Her clothes had been torn and the culprit had even set one bedroom on fire.
Caley had organized a fundraiser in memory of her brother Tom who passed away in a moped crash at the age of 17. The same day her home was destroyed by the invaders and Caley was sure it was done by Katie.
Katie and her boyfriend David Rodericks didn’t attend the fundraiser event and Caley suspected them of doing the damage to her house. She recalled the day of the break-in and said, “It was an amazing event to raise money for Tom’s college where he had learned gardening.”
“We had a funfair, pony rides, a barbecue, performances and even a Bob Marley tribute act. The sun was shining and the crowds were loving it. But at 2 pm I got a text from my neighbor, saying my window blinds were fully down.”
Caley’s neighbor told her that her house has been ransacked and the TV is missing. She rushed to her house in Enfield, North London, and discovered it has been damaged.
Caley said: “Something told me it was Katie. We’d been pals for 10 years and once shared the house, but our friendship had fallen apart when David came on the scene. He was jealous of our relationship and Katie eventually moved out.”
Later, Katie messaged Caley to tell her that she couldn’t attend the event as she was in the hospital. But Katie’s brother Christopher said that she had gone to Yorkshire which made Caley believe that she was the one who destroyed her house.
Caley interrogated her neighbors if they had seen someone outside the house that day, to which many confirmed they had seen Katie, David and Christoper outside the house on the same day.
One neighbor even said they had called the police after seeing them argue and they were almost arrested but Katie said that she has a key to the house which made the cops release them.
Caley said: “I was livid. I was not about to take this lying down. I hadn’t let on to Katie I knew she had been arrested and she was texting me as normal. It was a really difficult time. I wondered if the 10 years we shared as friends had ever meant anything to her.”
After a few weeks, Katie’s boyfriend David filed a civil claim against Caley saying she owed him money which he had given them for a deposit of their rented house.
Caley claimed that she has paid the money back but David showed him his credit card statements to show that she hadn’t paid it, to which Caley realized the couple was deceiving her for years.
Caley was shocked when she saw the TV which she and Katie had bought on David’s credit card showed the price of £1,800 and they had told her it was £4,000.
She added: “I delved deeper and deeper and was shocked. There were so many items she said we’d gone halves on that were cheaper than she claimed.”
Caley decided to file a counterclaim saying that Katie and David had cheated her of £29,500. She received the £6,000 back from the couple after winning the case.
Caley said: “I’m just glad I persevered. All those nights of poring over paperwork paid off in the long run.”
Katie, David and Christopher were found guilty at Guilford Crown Court and they were ordered to pay Caley £1,500 each in compensation.
