An expectant lady in the 12th week of her pregnancy went for a scan only to discover that her pregnancy was actually a tumor.
Grace Baker-Padden, of Willington, County Durham, UK, says that the pregnancy was initially shocking news for her because she was taking contraceptives regularly.
When the initial scans confirmed the pregnancy, Grace and Joe Cowling, her boyfriend, decided to carry on with the pregnancy and even gave the good news to their parents.
Grace, 23, was worried that she might have a miscarriage as she noticed blood on her clothes.
To check if everything was alright, she went for the 12-week scan, only to find out that it was something even serious than a miscarriage.
The thing they were considering a baby was actually a tumor.
Grace told The Mirror: “We decided to proceed with the pregnancy, we were so happy and excited. Our parents couldn’t wait to be first-time grandparents.”
The shocking results of the scan changed everything the expectant parents were planning.
Grace added: “It was such a shock. From planning this exciting new future as a family to suddenly no baby and my health at risk was awful. I just wanted the horrible mass out of me immediately.”
Joe said he was not feeling good about the scans the moment he saw them.
He said: “There was no baby shape – it looked like a bunch of grapes. The midwife said it looked like a ‘molar pregnancy,’ and went to find a doctor.
“We googled and saw it sometimes meant cancer. We began to panic.”
The medical staff soon confirmed that Grace had molar pregnancy, a gestational trophoblastic disease that is caused by non-fertilized eggs being implanted in the walls of the uterus.
Further testing brought even worse news, the tumor was malignant, the type that can spread across the body.
Grace had to undergo a surgery at an immediate basis to remove the tumor, and had chemotherapy for six months to recover from the hormonal imbalance created by the tumor.
Soon after, Grace received the good news that she was free of cancer.
The 12-week scan was conducted in February 2018, meaning it took her about a year to fully recover. However, doctors told her that there was still a 15 per cent chance of cancer coming back.
Grace and Joe plan to have a baby at some point. However, they are also ‘scared to try again’ due to what they just experienced.
